Day 238 of 365 – Practice Ringshot

Camera Model:   Canon EOS 40D
Exposure:  0.004 sec (1/250)
Aperture: f/16.0
Focal Length: 55 mm
ISO: 100

On Black

I am shooting a wedding ceremony in October for some friends. It will be the first one I have done. I decided today that I would use my photo of the day to practice a ring shot (using my wife’s ring).

The ceremony will be a fairly informal one and is actually a re commitment ceremony as the couple is actually already married. This ceremony is so they can exchange their vows in front of family and friends. If you have any advice on this shot or any advice for this type of ceremony in general I would love to hear it, either in the comments or via flickr mail.

Lighting: 580exii behind subject, vivitar 285hv above (very low power and high) through closed umbrella

Alternate version with a free texture I found on flickr (Detail on flickr info page)

  1. nicer with the darker colour and texture — would still like to see two rings and what would happen.

  2. flash batteries died :/ will have to try that soon though

Seen on your photo stream. (?)

  3. They’re both great shots; I like this one better though with the texture and warm tone. That’s beautiful light on the diamond!

Seen in my contacts’ photos. (?)

  4. nice!!

Seen in my contacts’ photos. (?²ˣ)

  5. love the texture and light

Seen on my Flickr home page. (?)

  6. I prefer this warm version. You are a brave man taking on a wedding! ;)

  7. I like the colour better… shows more of the textures and a warmth feeling.

  8. Thanks everyone.
@©Komatoes — I know exactly what you mean (re: being ‘brave’ to take on a wedding) The wedding, or re commitment ceremony, really is pretty informal, at the ‘brides’ parents home and they were going to have basically snapshots if I didn’t do it so I agreed after urging them to hire a pro (they were never going to go that route). That said I am not sure I want to do wedding photography but I am using this as an opportunity to learn about it and I am going to attempt to treat it like I am doing this for a paying client to see if it is something I want to pursue further. I am very neurvous about it but I am also excited for the opportunity :)

  9. "I don’t do weddings" they are worse than flowers! ;-p

  10. cool shot…great texture work!

What a great learning opportunity, and I’m sure they will be really pleased with the results. This is a great shot – one I have in the back of my mind for one of these days. I wonder if the interlocking rings are done with either a double exposure or by combining them in photoshop after the fact – otherwise I would think the shadows would get lost. Having said that, I could be wrong…

  12. I would be scared to death. Why I don’t photograph people. A tree can yell at you if you miss the shot. :P

  13. good luck, take loads of pics, you’ll easily get a selection of useable shots.

Nice idea this – nice glow around the diamond

  14. That is perfect, the texture, the light. Get it on "Love" on the dictionary and it would be a belter.

  15. I like it on black myself. Glad you used the "love" chapter!

    I love this one….beautiful!!
