Day 180 of 365 - Balancing On a Shadow

Balancing On a Shadow, originally uploaded by jeff_golden.

Saw this from my parking garage at work today and thought the shadow was a little interesting. Happy Monday everyone.

Alternate Crop I added after posting... I can't decide which I like better:

Day 179 of 365 - Trevor At His Birthday Party

Trevor At His Birthday Party, originally uploaded by jeff_golden.

Today we had Trevor's birthday with his friends. He turned eight yesterday and we took him, his brother and three of his friends bowling and back home for ice cream cake. This isn't my best photo of him but it shows him on his special day so it is my photo of the day. Bowling alleys are a pain to shoot in.

Day 178 of 365 - Never Grow Up

Never Grow Up, originally uploaded by jeff_golden.

Today is my youngest son, Trevor, birthday. We had a family party for him today. He received some 'ammunition' for this toy gun as a gift. Well it didn't take long for my Brother, Brian, and I to begin playing. Our goal was to capture one of the flying nerf 'bullets' mid air. Took about 20 tries (man we are weak hah) but we finally got it. I guess we will never grow up. Trevor has a party with his friends tomorrow. I will try to post a photo of that for tomorrow's photo of the day.

Day 177 of 365 - Dayna

Dayna, originally uploaded by jeff_golden.

Dayna agreed to model for me for a strobist type shot. I still have much to learn but this is taken in my garage against the garage door (I really need to invest in a roll of white seamless and some way to hang it for this kind of shot), using a vivitar 285 to blow out the background (with a bit of help from photoshop) and a 580exii camera left in an umbrella. Then touched up in photoshop. Not the best strobist style portrait ever but I think it turned out pretty well.

I pass by this field every day, and today is the first day I really noticed it was even there. I thought that the texture was really interesting. You may see this show up another time at some point as this was taken from the car while I was stopped at a light too far away. I would have rather have got out and used my 17-55 on this and a larger depth of field. I still liked it enough to post it though.

I took this shot a while back, it isn't any amazing photo or anything I just admired the bike. I don't ride or anything but I appreciate motorcycles as works of art, and this definitely qualifies for that.

Someone, in the comments on flickr, asked how i processed it so I thought I would copy that here.

"I couldn't tell you how exactly I processed it, it's been a while since I started playing with this one, according to the PSD file it looks like a curves layer masked to take the background exposure down and couple of minor touch ups to get rid of a part of a parked car behind and brighten up the front part of the bike. Last night I added a high pass filter overlay layer to sharpen. And used nik define to clean up the noise I introduced in the parts I dodged."

Day 175 of 365 - Stepping Out There

Stepping Out There, originally uploaded by jeff_golden.

Putting One foot in front of the other, even if you don't quite know where you are going or if you will succeed, is the only way to get anywhere.

Strobe's Eye View

Not 100% sure this works but I am playing with the idea of doing a series of shots from unusual perspectives.

Day 174 of 365 - Surviving the Summer

I saw these today when I was out at lunchtime. It was in the high 90s. These seem to do a better job at handling it than I am doing right now.

Day 173 of 365 - Camera Porn

Another lazy shot, but one I have been meaning to do for a while now.
I am finding the photo a day thing to be more challenging lately. I am almost ready to start 'cheating' a bit and posting images I have taken earlier rather than doing the photo every day :(

Shot with the 17-55f2.8 IS lens. Natural Light from window Camera Right.

Day 172 of 365 - Dad

As today was Father's Day I decided to photograph my Dad. The background was a mess so I used nik viveza and photoshop to get rid of it. The lighting consisted of a 580exii through a shoot through umbrella camera left and a vivitar 285hv behind, though I don't think the vivitar contributed much of anything to the exposure.

Day 171 of 365 - Acer Aspire One

Sorry the photography mojo is still not flowing too well. But I did want to share with you guys this new toy. It's an Acer Aspire One d250 netbook. It came with windows but do not fear, fixed it ;). I put ubuntu netbook addition on it. Really cool little surfing machine. In any case hopefully I will start to think of some new things to shoot soon.

I don't have a lot to say about this one. Not great but better than yesterday's :)

Too Cool For School

This is a shot that I made with the home made soft box (taken the same day as the others) that I uploaded a while ago I just got around to doing final processing on it today. Since my photo of the day upload was so lame today I thought I would upload another.

Strobist: Canon 580EXII camera left in home made soft box

Day 169 of 365 - Sorry In A Rush Today

I am a bad photoblogger for making you look at this, sorry :). In a hurry today and didn't want to miss my photo of the day for today so this is just a quick handheld snap sp. I promise to try to do better tomorrow.

PLEASE DO NOT FEEL OBLIGATED TO COMMENT ON THIS :)

Come On Apple!

I am about as big of an apple fanboi as you are going to find. But this is getting ridiculous. Why is it that a point release of a flippin browser requires a a frickin restart? This isn't Windows for God Sake.

Day 168 of 365 - Liquors

My wife and I went out for lunch and I had hoped to get out and walk around and do some shooting. But the heat was just too much. So instead of a photo walk we did a photo drive; not ideal. She drove; I shot. I found this sign, and the building, to be interesting so I thought I would use it for my photo of the day (shot through windshield). It was close to noon so the light was atrocious. As such I processed it with Nik Color Effex using a film effect (I thought the film look worked with the vintage sign) and changed the color temperature quite a bit. Not quite an "unsuck" filter, but it certainly works better than the original.

Day 167 of 365 - Go Outside!

Decided to go a little out of my comfort zone today as far as exposure and processing. I saw my son playing on the computer and thought he should be outside playing on this nice summer day instead. Tried to capture that with this image, with the exposure, focus and selective color.

Blogger!!!**!@#@!#!#@!

I am getting very very close to kicking blogger to the curb and going back to wordpress or moving to squarespace or something. The comments and authentication problem I have been seeing with blogger in the last few days are infuriating! It doesn't recognize I am logged in even after I sign out and log back in. It rejects comments, simply refreshing the page and ignoring the input. It doesn't let me paste into the comments, seriously? How does that even happen? Sorry I'm ranting but blogger is really annoying me these days.

Day 166 of 365 - You Sank My Battleship

My son and I played a game of battleship when he got home from summer school today. I snapped a few pictures. I thought this one came out pretty cute.

Day 165 of 365 - Float On

My youngest wanted to go to the marina at a local lake and feed the fish, geese and ducks so we went and did that. Didn't stay very long but had a good time while we were there. Found this one out a bit from the ohters while people were feeding them. This one must have already had its fill.

Day 164 of 365 - No Pictures

My back is killing me today but I managed to pick up the camera and capture this one. I think it accurately represents how my wife and children feel about my camera these days :P Happy weekend everyone.

Day 163 of 365 - Goodbye Old Friend...

Today in the US the last of the analog channels were turned off. Making this old set obsolete, without a box of some sort. Didn't really effect me much as I subscribe to pay tv, and these old sets still work fine with pay tv boxes. In any case sort of a historical day in a way so I thought I would commemorate it with my photo of the day.

Day 162 of 365 - Start Me Up

70-200 f2.8 is with full set of Kenko tubes

Lighting: 1 580exii below key 1/8 power. Triggered by Cybersync.

Yes I probably looked strange taking a picture of my key in the parking lot at work with a big ol lens and off camera flash.

Day 158 of 365 - Are We Done Yet?

Please view large on black

I made me a new softbox out of some aluminum foil, a box, tissue paper and duct tape all mcgyver style :P. I think I had heard of how to do this somewhere else (edit: upon further research I must have got the inspiration here) but I didn't refer to any instructions just sort of improvised. Turned out pretty well I think.

Day 157 of 365 - Gone Fishin

Another really lazy shot for me today. My heart just wasn't in it today. My son went to Branson, MO overnight with his grandparents (my parents) and he came back with this bear, from build a bear. I thought it would make a cute little photo.

Day 156 of 365 - I Got Me Some WiFi via MiFi

I'm all about gadgets... If it blinks, beeps or has a chip I am on it. This is kind of a lazy photo of the day, sorry, but I am super excited about my new mifi. Fair disclosure, I work for Sprint (A US Cellular phone company), but even if I didn't this thing is cool It creates a wifi network out of the cell network so you can get access to the internet from your devices which work with wifi. Sprint just got them in the stores today. In any case I love mine. Works great with the iPod Touch.

Jets

I bought a silly car wash today just to take pictures... this is the only one that remotely was decent so I thought I would post it, so as not to waste my $5... well really the car needed to be washed but I never do that....

Day 154 of 365 - Spin Me Right Round

Fake HDR one exposure, photomatix with a touch of nik define to lose some of the noise...

Day 153 of 365 - Ride Until The Wheels Fall Off

My son's dirty old skates. I saw them in the garage gathering dust, as you can see, and thought they would make a neat photo. If nothing else it let me play around with my strobes at a time when I should be sleeping :)

Lighting: Vivitar 285hv Behind 1/1, Canon 580EXII camera right 1/64 (intentionally pulled the sync speed above max 1/3 of a stop to get black on the right of the frame.

Day 152 of 365 - Stump

Not a lot to say about this one. I just sort of liked it.
