Moving Day (b&w)
Large On Black
I showed today's photo of the day to my wife and she suggested that it would probably look good in b&w. After seeing it in b&w I have to agree this version is a lot better.

Today was moving day at my job. I work for a big company and they decided to do a re-stack, which is basically moving all the cubes around. In order to keep people out of the way they ask most people not to come in on moving day and work from home. I needed to come in anyway, to turn on some computers. This parking lot usually has a lot more cars :) I thought it was interesting to see it empty like this. Yah I know your not 'supposed' to blow out the whites like this :) but I'm calling it artistic license because the the stuff outside the 'windows' is distracting anyways.

I bought this camera, ostensibly for my wife, some time ago. She would be happy with any point and shoot that lets her push the button and it takes a reasonably sharp image. I got this one for 'her' so that I could have fun with it too :). That said I have hardly used it. To the point that I don't even know how to use the advanced features.
Thinking about that made me decide to commit to using her camera at least once a week for my photo a day project. That way I will learn how to use it. The photo a day project I am working on has really made me pretty comfortable with my DSLR and I am thinking it can help do the same with this advanced point and shoot.
Lighting: 580exii camera right gelled CTO (used two stacked) , Vivitar 285hv camera left snooted.

I've seen similar shots and like them. I think mine turned out OK but I will probably try it again at some point with some different colors.

My Nephew, Justuss, has loved to read since he could. I snapped this of him at one of his brother's birthday party today and thought I would make it my photo of the day. He is looking down here reading something and I thought that it really captured a lot of what this quiet boy was all about.

Really crummy snap today.... sorry my viewers. I came home to an air conditioner that was broken and my wife's car stalled and wouldn't start on the highway. So I am not feeling very creative this evening. But posting a quick snap to stay on my 365 track :)

Getting the technical stuff out of the way first :)

Processing: Followed this guide and backed down the final result a bit.
Flickr has this 'game' that people play, actually I think version of it are played in tons of other social networks as well. Essentially the rules of the game are that, if you are tagged, you are to post a self portrait, list 15 things about yourself and tag three of your own contacts to do the same. adebⓞnd tagged me today with his self portrait. I am in turn tagging: wikenden, fleabo and Sue's Stuff.
Without further ado... my 15 things....
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1) I was tagged once before but blew it off like a fuddy duddy. Decided to give it a whirl this time.
2) I have been married since I was 21 to my wife who was only 18 at the time for 16 years. We have two children. Trevor is eight years old and stars in many of my photographs. Jeffrey is 12 and has been in a few photos as well; Jeffrey is autistic so his appearances in my photos are less frequent as he doesn't like to cooperate.
3) I live within an approximately five minute drive of my parents.
4) I started with photography a little more than a year ago.
5) I have agreed to photograph a wedding in October of this year. I am very nervous about this.
6) I played MMORPG (Everquest, Dark Ages of Camelot & WOW) role playing games pretty consistently for approximately 6 years. I wish I had calculated all of the played time but it would probably just be scary to know that number; suffice it to say I played for an average of no less than 5 or 6 hours daily with times where I would literally be logged in for more than 24 hours at a time. I have found though that Flickr has cured me of this but I don't spend much less time on here than I did on these games :P.
7) I am the biggest Apple 'fanboi' you will ever find.
8) Other than when I was a baby, and my father was stationed in Germany with the US Army, I have never traveled outside of the United States.
9) I watch entirely too much television. My current favorites are Dexter, on Showtime and True Blood on HBO. I also watch a lot of prime time drama style shows on network TV. It's sad really.
10) I need to lose *A LOT* of weight, this is probably my biggest challenge. It is definitely something that is beyond ridiculous and why you will not see a self portrait of me that isn't very creatively posed, cropped or framed to hide as much as I can.
11) I drink more Diet Coke & Diet Pepsi than any human being should. I suspect that if I were to stop the companies would feel the economic impact. So it is really for the good of the economy in general that I must press on :P
12) I never half do anything I care about. I am very binary in my thinking. I am either completely committed or do just enough to get by.
13) I hate -- meaning can't stand and it bugs me to death -- any indication of unread status, email, etc... I literally have to stop what I am doing and check my email if there is a little number beside it indicating any unread messages. I am the same way with facebook notices or anything like it. If I see other people who have things in an unread state it really bothers me :P.
14) I love audio books and podcasts. I listen to them on my daily commute of 30 to 40 minutes each way to work.
15) I think of myself as a funny guy, though I know I am usually not very funny :)
We had a good time at my parents tonight. We celebrated my sisters birthday and had her son, my kids and my brother's kids there. They had fun playing with these little drink umbrellas. Not sure where these came from, there was nothing resembling adult beverages in the vicinity :) In any case I thought this shot was kind of cute.
I was having a hard time choosing a subject for today's photo of the day. I picked this up just to stand in while I set up lighting and to think of something else. Then I remembered that fionaandneil, one of my flickr contacts and a member of my photo a day group, actually used a photo of a whisk earlier this year: www.flickr.com/photos/fionaandneilpics/3513172823/
Her shot is better than mine but I got the inspiration there. I thought the, uhm, well used shape that this one was in kind of made it a little interesting in a random sort of way. Umbrellas both sides, on glossy printer paper. I forgot the power settings...
I drink a lot of Diet Pepsi at work, not that I have anything against Diet Coke -- I drink mostly that at home. I really can barely tell the difference -- I know there are some that would gasp at that statement but it is the truth. In any case I drink Pepsi at work because that is what is stocked in the machines on my floor of the building. Recently they started this contest for Rockband prizes. I was lucky enough to win a Rockband 2 set for the Wii. It arrived today so I thought I would use it for my photo of the day. I lit this with two speedlights one with a red gel and one with a blue gel (one to each side) but I didn't pay much attention to the settings (sorry).
My dog is not a fan of having his picture made. I managed to grab this one before he ran off today. His expression, to me, tells the story of his annoyance at me holding my camera. In any case it is one of the few decent pictures of him I have been able to get.
I used to have one of these, well probably I had several, as a kid. I didn't have woody from toy story in mine but I must admit, even after all these years it is still fun to look through a viewmaster and see the images popping out at you.
Just a snap of Trevor playing the Wii. He, like most 8 year old boys I gather, would spend all day playing this thing if we would let him.
Trying out some more lighting stuff... this didn't turn out how I had planned. I still need to get some backdrop paper, obviously, but it was just an exercise me to play with lighting anyway. I was hoping to get a decent jump shot but after about 2 dozen attempts, as you can see, my model decided enough was enough.
My family visited the Deanna Rose Farmstead today. It is a children's petting zoo near where we live. I made quite a few images that might find their way on to flickr over the next few days but I found these flowers and thought I would make them my picture of the day for the day. I have no idea what they are but I thought they were cheerful.
A composite of several exposures from the fireworks show tonight in my town. Adding another from tonight that I helped along in photoshop. I like it a bit better than the one I posted that was mostly straight out of the camera.
I tried this first as a long exposure but ended up making a composite of a lot of short of one second exposures. I wish I could say this was an original idea but I have seen it done several times and liked it. I have no idea who did it first.
Most of you have seen a lot of shots of my youngest, Trevor. He Just turned eight and is a typical eight year old boy. I have a couple of shots of Jeffrey in my photo stream as well, but not nearly as many because he is not nearly as easy to get settled for a photograph. Jeffrey is 12 years old and is severely autistic. I saw him at the computer this afternoon, listening with headphones and basically content in his own little world and thought this was the story I wanted to share today. He is a happy little boy who, for the most part, loves to live his life in the land of elmo and infomercial videos on youtube. He will, begrudgingly, come out of that world for some things -- photographs are not high on that list :). We love him dearly. Hopefully someday soon he will allow me to photograph him properly again. For Now I have included a couple of photos I managed to wrestle out of him earlier this year (click through the image to flickr to see them)
