Day 365 of 365 - Wrapping It Up

Wrapping It Up
Camera Model: Canon EOS 7D
Exposure: 0.004 sec (1/250)
Aperture: f/11.0
Focal Length: 145 mm
ISO: 100

Well… WOW! Today marks the end of my 365 project for 2009.
Let's get the bragging (er stats) out of the way first:

Days Photograph was taken: 365
Days Photograph was posted: 365
Days Missing: 0

When I started this project I thought, probably like most people, this can't be that tough. I mean you click the shutter and upload the image. And true, it isn't tough in that regard. What is tough is trying to be creative on a regular basis and produce something other than a snapshot daily. I can't say I was successful in doing that 365 days but I think I was successful in doing it quite a bit more than I wasn't.

I have to thank so many people for their support during this project. First is my family. Especially my son, who modeled patiently and sometimes a little less than patiently but still stood there :). My wife who put up with my photography gear spread out on the kitchen table night after night and the photography gear that has taken up permanent residence in a corner of our living room.

Next is the Flickr Photo A Day 2009 group and the ClanFlickr group. Both of these groups are full of great people. Before this year I had really no contacts on Flickr and hadn't really used flickr much. I have met nearly all of my contacts through these groups and have really grown to love the community on flickr. Your comments and visits to my stream have been so encouraging and have really motivated me to keep going with this project.

Don't tune out just yet if you are following me on Flickr, My Blog, Twitter or Facebook :). Next year, though less structured, I hope to produce just as much content and continue to learn and grow with my passion of photography. I hope that you will stick around with me. I am also looking forward to the things that my contacts have planned for next year. It promises to be very exciting and fun.

Happy New Year everyone may 2010 be full of everything good for you. And Keep on Clicking :)

Day 364 of 365 - A Matter of Perspective

Camera Model: Canon EOS 7D
Exposure: 0.004 sec (1/250)
Aperture: f/5.6
Focal Length: 135 mm
ISO: 100

This shot is more to illustrate the words that I am saying here than to stand alone, but thats ok :).

** This is very geeky... you have been warned :) **
I needed to get some more space so I went out to a local store today and picked up this 1 terabyte drive. I had actually walked in hoping to grab a 2tb drive (or at least 1.5). They didn't have the 1.5 tb drive in the brand I prefer and the 2 tb in this brand was a lot more expensive than the 1tb and more than I wanted to pay. So I settled for the 1 terabyte drive.

Walking out of the store it struck me at how funny that statement would have sounded to me just a few years ago let alone at the beginning of the decade that is coming to a close right now. Not long before the beginning of the decade I picked up a 1 Gigabyte hard drive used from an acquaintance where I worked. That drive cost me $500 and was a full-height SCSI drive. Today I paid less than a 5th of that for 1000 times more space and I considered it settling for smaller than I wanted LOL.

I guess it is all a matter of perspective :) Happy new year everyone.

Day 363 of 365 - Topsy Turvy

Camera Model: Canon EOS 7D

Struggle

Camera Model: Canon EOS 40D
Exposure: 0.3 seconds
Aperture: f/4.0
Focal Length: 50 mm
ISO: 400

I made this SP one night (in September) when I was struggling with my PAD project and some other things. I was going for a gritty kind of feel and I think I achieved it. I haven't posted it until now because I didn't quite hit the focus on my eyes (or they moved or something) and I just wasn't sure I wanted to post something this personal (if that makes any sense at all). But I was sorting through my PAD photos tonight (almost finished :D yay) and I saw it and decided I was going to go ahead and post it.

Day 361 of 365 - Finally Over

Camera Model: Canon EOS 7D
Exposure: 0.013 sec (1/80)
Aperture: f/2.8
Focal Length: 43 mm
ISO: 1000

I enjoy Christmas time as much as the next guy but I am glad it is finally over. Here lies the aftermath of the 'treat/snacks' from today's rescheduled "Christmas Day" get together. I am glad that these every other day meals and snack fests are over for a while. Don't get me wrong I enjoy them but I can't take any more :)

Day 360 of 365 - Snowed In

Camera Model: Palm Pre
Exposure: Unknown
Aperture: Unknown
Focal Length: Unknown
ISO: Unknown

Not much artistic about this shot but I had to share it. We got between 5 and 8 or so inches of snow on Christmas eve and Christmas day. It prevented us from making or normal trek to visit family on Christmas day but it was kind of nice spending it at home. I did venture out to McDonalds this afternoon to get food, as we were out at home. Saw this and I just had to share it. I can only guess that this belongs to an employee of the McDonalds who was unable to get it home on Christmas eve.

Day 359 of 365 - Merry Christmas

Camera Model: Canon EOS 7D
Exposure: 0.017 sec (1/60)
Aperture: f/4.0
Focal Length: 37 mm
ISO: 800

Just a quick snap from this morning after we finished oping packages. I hope everyone had a fantastic Christmas.

I shot this with my new Canon 7D using the master mode for ETTL off camera flash with the 580exii in slave mode behind and to the right shooting into a reflective umbrella. Still learning but it worked out nicely for the photos this morning.

Camera Model: Canon EOS 40D
Exposure: 0.004 sec (1/250)
Aperture: f/4.0
Focal Length: 38 mm
ISO: 400

Christmas present to myself :) I have been trying to decide between the 5dii and the 7d for some time now and decided to go ahead and pull the trigger on this one. This isn't a great shot of it but I was pressed for time. headed out the door to my folks for Christmas Eve. Hope everyone has a great evening. I'll catch up on your streams later or tomorrow.

Day 357 of 365 - It's Just the Roll of the Dice

Camera Model: Canon EOS 40D
Exposure: 0.004 sec (1/250)
Aperture: f/11.0
Focal Length: 50 mm
ISO: 200

Just a random idea I had today, hope you all like it. On another note if you take a look at my blog I posted a little bit about my 365 experience and the stuff I have planned for next year. Feel free to give it a read if you have a few minutes you don't mind not getting back :P.

And to my flickr contact Rantz this wasn't an accident :) Happy 23 on the 23rd.

Setup:
Background (or surface whatever you prefer) black side of my 5-in-1 reflector by westcott. 580EXII camera right 1/128th. Procesed in Nik Silver Efex.

Wow What A Year!!!

I just took a look back to see when my first post on this blog was; it was December 19th 2008. I am a bit late for a birthday blog post but oh well I really didn't get things rolling in earnest until the first of the year anyway with the photo a day project. But I thought this was as good of time as any to talk about my experiences with the project, the blog, photography and my plans for next year.

The photo a day project has been really great for me. I am sure, if you have been following me throughout the year, you have seen my excitement at the stuff I really liked, my struggles on days when I just didn't feel it and everything in between. All in all, however, I have learned a tremendous amount about photography and all things related to it this year. I have made some great friends on flickr which I wouldn't have had the opportunity to find otherwise and I have enjoyed the project a lot.

The project itself has ups and downs, as I am sure most endeavors like this do. The rules I imposed on myself were that I had to shoot, edit and upload the image on the same day each and every day of the year. This resulted in a lot of days, when I wasn't super motivated, uploading images I wasn't very proud of. But, other days, it resulted in me uploading some of what I consider my most creative work of the year because I looked, thought and tried until I got something interesting. Without the project I would have never done that.

That said, a year of this project is enough for me. I have developed a habit of taking photos with my camera. I have also developed a habit of mentally framing photos without it. These are good habits to have and will serve me well in 2010.   My photography projects for 2010, one of which I have already talked about here, are: Holiday/This Day In History Photos and Seven A Week.

The Holiday/This Day In History project is a simple concept. On many or most days I will be posting a photograph that depicts, represents or otherwise is associated with events for that day in history or the Holiday associated with that day. The idea is that there isn't a calendar day that doesn't have a Holiday or some interesting event/fact associated with it. My project is to find those tidbits and make a photograph telling the story. My thoughts at this point are to find the obscure stuff; as I think it will be more fun and interesting. At this point though I don't have any idea how I am going to setup these scenes or what I am going to do. Stay tuned and I hope you enjoy it. Also, feel free to join in the fun, I have setup a flickr group so that others who want to participate with me may do so. There is no obligation to do a photo on this theme each day or anything -- just as often as you feel motivated to do it and it doesn't require any special equipment. A point and shoot camera will be fine or even a cell phone cam. The point is to be creative not to make perfect photos.

The next project is a seven a week project. This group is really just an extension of my photo a day group from 2009. Many of the more active members of that group are participating in this one. I am excited that my friends from last year will be working on a project together again this year. I had sworn I wouldn't do another 365 this year but the rules of this one are a little more palatable. Essentially I will need to take seven photos in a week. It doesn't matter if they are all taken on Monday or if they are taken one a day or whatever. Just seven a week. I don't intend to be as obsessive about this project. I will be posting them to the blog, of course, but I will not be numbering them and absolutely keeping track of the number posted or anything.

I also hope to be able to do a bit more work with portraits and maybe even second shooting a wedding or two.   I would really like to get more experience with the wedding thing to see if it is something I would enjoy marketing and doing myself at some point.   The portrait sessions I have done thus far have been a lot of fun.   I find myself gaining a lot of confidence and I really enjoy the reactions of the 'clients' when they see what we were able to create together.    To that end I have setup a proper website and pricing list.  We shall see what 2010 brings on this front.  I am under no delusion that I will be a full time professional photographer by the end of 2010 or anything.  But I would really like the opportunity to explore this a little more.

Beyond the photography projects I intend to become more active and involved in social media. I have a twitter account that I actively post links to my photos, I do the same for facebook and I have this blog, obviously. But I don't do much more than lurk beyond this. I am planning to pick out several relatively active blogs and become involved in the community on each of them. I am also planning to take my twittering to a new level and dedicate some time each day to reading, responding and re-tweeting. My objective here is to not just lurk and not just promote my own stuff but actually get involved with the communities.

I hope all of you who see this have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year :). Please continue to follow my posts after the photo a day project is complete. I expect you will find I post slightly less often, still several times a week though, but I hope I make up for the less frequent posts with higher quality ones. Thanks again for reading this and for following me throughout the year it really helped to motivate me that people were looking at what I was doing even if many of you I didn't know your name or anything about you.

Day 355 of 365 - Drill

Camera Model: Canon EOS 40D
Exposure: 0.004 sec (1/250)
Aperture: f/16.0
Focal Length: 50 mm
ISO: 400

Macro Monday 12/21/09 - Do It Yourself

I am about the least 'handy' sort of fellow you will meet :P I don't own tools or know how to use them. Well I didn't until last weekend. My parents bought me a drill, some bits and a nice carrying case for Christmas so I can now say I own some tools I guess haha. In any case what you are looking at is the bit of the drill through a 50mm lens with 68mm of extension tubes. I shot this at f16 to get at least the tip of the drill in focus; I maybe should have shot me cleaning my sensor for this assignment lol. Spent a long time taking dust spots off the image and I probably missed a few LOL! Happy Macro Monday and Merry Christmas everyone.

Day 354 of 365 - Cookie Monster

Camera Model: Canon EOS 40D
Exposure: 0.025 sec (1/40)
Aperture: f/3.2
Focal Length: 55 mm
ISO: 800

A quick snap, cross processed in nik color efex pro, of Brady. We had Christmas with my wife's side of the family and had a lot of fun. The kids had a great time and I scored an ETTL off shoe cord and some cool honl light modifier gear to boot :)

How to Fold Collapsable Reflectors and Backgrounds

I got a new reflector tonight as a Christmas gift from my parents, thanks mom and dad. After everyone left I decided to take it out and take a look at it. Mighty big, very cool. One problem though; how to fold it back up? Check the instructions... nope nothing about it. Read the online review and all I see is 'easy to fold up'. Well now not only is my reflector huge and unfolded and I can't figure out how to fold it but I feel like a complete dummy as clearly everyone else has no problem. To Youtube I go... Posting this so 1) maybe someone who needs to know will google it and find it via my blog 2) so I know where to look if I need to reference it again :P.

Thanks B&H for making this video. Worked like a charm even though my reflector was different from the one used in the video.

Oh and that background with a sweep looks really slick.. may have to add that to my list of things I want to buy at some point :)

Day 353 of 365 - Chimping Chuck

Camera Model: Canon EOS 40D
Exposure: 0.02 sec (1/50)
Aperture: f/4.0
Focal Length: 55 mm
ISO: 400

We had the first of four christmas get togethers to come over the next few days tonight. This one was with my parents, and sibilings and their families. We had a lot of fun enjoying time together eating too much and opening gifts.

This is a shot of my Dad chimping on his camera after taking a shot of someone opening a gift. (His name is Charlie hence the title :P)

Chimping (most of my friends on flickr are familiar with it but if you are not) is when you look at the back of your camera after taking a shot to see if you got something good. When you do you go "ooh ooh ooh" which sort of sounds like a chimpanzee... or so that is how I have heard it explained :)

What a Headache

What a Headache!

Bad day at work today a database conversion didn't go as it should have because someone else didn't do something right. Means I get to work tomorrow. So this seemed appropriate. More fun with my lensbaby fisheye here -- taken while waiting for the person who was doing the work that didn't work to finish doing the work that didn't work... do I sound biter?

Day 352 of 365 - Last To Leave

Camera Model: Canon EOS 40D
Exposure: 0.1 sec (1/10)
Aperture: f/8 (aperture disc)
Focal Length: 12mm fisheye
ISO: 1600

Got this tonight before I left work for home; something about empty parking lots really grab me. I left about my normal time but being a friday this close to the holidays you can see there weren't many around.

This photo was made using a combination of my new lensbaby fisheye optic and Nik Silver Efex.

Popping The Eyes!

This is a short video tutorial I made on how to make the eyes in a photo really jump out at the viewer. I recently posted a photo of me peeking over a christmas gift. That photo sparked some discussion on flickr of how I make the eyes look the way I do. This tutorial gives you the technique. As I said over on flickr this isn't my own idea; I read it somewhere and just started doing it. I have also seen it described in other places as well since so it is a fairly common technique but I thought I would share it.

Day 351 of 365 - Step Into The Light

Camera Model: Palm Pre
Exposure: Unknown
Aperture: f/2.4 (suspect value -- the rest of the values from the exif are pretty wacky)
Focal Length: Unknown
ISO: Unknown

I didn't have my DSLR with me today but I saw the light coming from the stairs in a garage where I worked and it grabbed my attention. So I used my mobile phone to capture it. I had to tweak things a bit in Nik Silverefex to get the scene the way I wanted to capture it but this is pretty much what I was thinking when I snapped the photo. I haven't decided if I like it or not yet... but I find it interesting.

Day 350 of 365 - Ho Ho Ho

Camera Model: Canon EOS 40D
Exposure: 3.2
Aperture: f/11.0
Focal Length: 12mm fisheye
ISO: 100

Well..... I received an early christmas present tonight :P (see this for more info... LOL ) The lensbaby fisheye lens is so cool. This is the first shot I am sharing from it but there will be more I am sure of it.

The Paxton Family

I had the opportunity to shoot family portraits for my wife's sister and her family yesterday. If you scroll back to December 13th photo of the day you can see one of Scott, my brother-in-law, rocking out to rock band dressed in a crazy get up. Scott is definitely an interesting fellow :)

Here are a few more from the day. I really enjoyed hanging out with them and making the photos.

Macro Monday 12/7/09 - Drive Me Wild

Ok... so I admit I have a problem. I am as bad or worse than the kids when it comes to Christmas gifts. My wife and I buy each other gifts but rarely, if ever, make it to the actual holiday before exchanging them. This year I have hit a new low. I know what she got me already lol. Oh well... so I thought I would use this for my macro monday entry on "Drive's Me Wild" because it drives me wild to wait until Christmas Day to open the gifts hahaha. And yes, I know it's not a macro -- but I dare say it is as close as anyone wants a photo of my face to be :P

Happy MM everyone.

Setup:
580exii 1/2 power gelled cto through shoot through umbrella high camera right close to my face triggered cybersync.
Nik Color Efex for Lighten/Darken Center.
Aperture to crop to 4x5 resolution and just get a hint of the tree lights behind.

Day 347 of 365 - Rock You!

Camera Model: Canon EOS 40D
Exposure: 0.04 sec (1/25)
Aperture: f/5.6
Focal Length: 24 mm
ISO: 800

I did a family session for my Wife's sister's family today. We got some traditional shots but we decided to go into the rec room and get a few of them playing rockband. My brother-in-law here, Scott, is quite the character. from the outfit he chose to the wig to the pose.... Well you get the idea.

I'll post a few more of the family shots in the next day or so and linke more of them on my blog. We had a lot of fun making them.

Setup:
I had two lights one was behind the furniture, as you can see here, the other was reflecting off a large tv screen behind me. Processed this with the bleach bypass effect in Nik Color Efex.

Day 346 of 365 - Waiting For It To Pass

Camera Model: Canon EOS 40D
Exposure: 0.003 sec (1/400)
Aperture: f/1.8
Focal Length: 50 mm
ISO: 400

This is really a photo trying to make something out of nothing. It was shot from my window while waiting for the train to pass. We had been at my nephews birthday party but I attempted to use the lensbaby most of the time there and what little I got acceptable focus on were really kind of crummy shots and really boring. This shot was kind of boring, as well, but the best I took today so I decided to doctor it up and got this. What do ya think?

Day 345 of 365 - Lumix DMC-FS4

Camera Model: Canon EOS 40D
Exposure: 0.004 sec (1/250)
Aperture: f/10.0
Focal Length: 55 mm
ISO: 100

Nicer Large on White

I wasn't having much luck coming up with a shot for today. So I decided to go back to a product shot again. This is a Christmas Gift for my mother in law; she has been using my old 2 megapixel Canon for a long time but it is about 3 times thicker than this and a lot heavier. This one was only about $100 and seems ok for a simple point and shoot. I hadn't seen many of this particular model (the FS4) so I am not sure how good of photos you can make with it but I suspect it will be better than the 2 megapixel one she has now :) (she has no computer or internet so she isn't likely to see this entry so I am not ruining her surprise for Christmas)

Setup: Glossy printer paper formed into a sweep. Vivitar 285hv aimed at background (1/16) 580exii aimed at ceiling 1/4 power. Cybersync. Cleaned up the whites in photoshop to get the background. This one may have been with a short extension tube or not I can't remember for sure.

Day 344 of 365 - Light Candy

Camera Model: Canon EOS 40D
Exposure: 0.004 sec (1/250)
Aperture: f/11.0
Focal Length: 50 mm
ISO: 100

I was struggling with an idea for today's photo a day and decided to just start playing with different ideas as I do sometimes when I don't have anything solid. This idea, with the candy cane, didn't really appeal to me too much and still doesn't but I loved the light I was getting from backlighting it with the strobe. So here we are :)

Lit with one 580exii behind subject 1/128th (Very close)

Jarsulic Family

I had the opportunity, as mentioned in a previous blog post, to photograph the Jarsulic family last Saturday. We had fun shooting the photos. I wanted to share a few of the images from the day. Thanks Erin & Justin and thank you to your adorable girls for giving me the chance to make your portraits.

This one was all Erin's idea.  I can't take any credit but I liked how it turned out :)

Camera Model: Canon EOS 40D
Exposure: 0.033 sec (1/30)
Aperture: f/2.8
Focal Length: 28 mm
ISO: 200

The only way I shop for christmas is online. I absolutely hate the crowds out there! But then my wife does most of the shopping so I only had to get hers :). In any case I thought I would remind everyone that there were only about 17 days left :) Oh -- and I should realy clean my laptop screen :)

Setup:
Camera on tripod upside down, flipped in post. Vivitar 285hv directly above subject with collapsed umbrella gelled cto. Camera set to tungsten wb to get the wite christmas light bokeh.

Macro Monday 12/7/09 - Drips, Drops and Splashes

I haven't ever done a shot like this before and it took quite a bit to get one I liked (I think I shot 200 shots lol).

Setup:
Small bowl of water, food coloring hand dripped at what I hoped was the right place for a sharp exposure (took a bit to find this). 580EXII Camera left 1/16 bare, vivitar 285hv camera right 1/16 bare. Triggered by cybersync. 70-200f2.8is lens with kenko extension tubes on a tripod with a white sheet of printer paper to serve as the background.

Day 340 of 365 - Master

Camera Model: Canon EOS 40D
Exposure: 0.004 sec (1/250)
Aperture: f/18.0
Focal Length: 195 mm
ISO: 100

I had considered shooting this for last week's macro monday (assignment was Security) I shot this instead but I still wanted to do one of this object and since today wasn't presenting me with any other ideas I present this to you.

I enjoy setting up and shooting product shots; even though I don't really have a reason to do it. Other than I enjoy it. And I guess that's ok :) Well that and the models rarely complain when you shoot them.

Shot with my 70-200 at f/18 using 48 mm of keno extension tubes (36+12). light from a 580exii bare above the subject at 1/8 power. B&W processing in Nik Silver Efex.

I had the opportunity to shoot family portraits today for the Jarsulic Family. I work with the Mom in this shot and she has seen some of my photo a day project and asked me to do this for her. I really enjoyed meeting her husband and seeing her girls again. They are both adoreable, as you can see. Overall the entire experience was fun for me, and I think everyone.

I couldn't pick just one shot so I included a couple of my favorites here. I have many to process and I am waiting for word back from the family on which ones, out of my picks, they like and would like to see processed for prints.

Day 338 of 365 - Trevor And The Tree

for both shots
Camera Model: Canon EOS 40D
Exposure: 0.02 sec (1/50)
Aperture: f/2.8
Focal Length: 43 mm

I am shooting a family session tomorrow (for Christmas and other portraits) so I decided drag out default model again :P (thanks Trevor). This will be my first time shooting a family portrait session with people not related to me; wish me luck -- pretty neurvous. (now that I have it up here looks like I could have gone a tad brighter still on the main one -- oh well; i may fix it later)

The bottom picture I told him to say 'I like girls' trying to get some expressions :P

Setup:
580EXII camera Right and close 1/128th (could have stood to have this a bit brighter -- had to do a lot of brightening in post) through shoot through gelled CTO. Triggered Cybersync.
